2gether for Mental Health • Germany

An Intergenerational Initiative for Positive Mental Health and Holistic Well-being

2gether for Mental Health is implemented by KinderRechte Forum (KRF) in partnership with the Learning for Well-being Foundation. The project works closely with schools in Cologne, aiming to strengthen mental health and holistic well-being for children and youth.

The Challenge

Children in Germany are facing a growing mental health crisis. According to the 2024 German School Barometer (Robert Bosch Stiftung):

  • 27% of students report a low quality of life
  • 21% feel mentally stressed, rising to 33% among children from low-income families
  • 20% are unhappy with their school experience

Children are also overwhelmed by global issues such as climate change, conflict, academic pressure, and uncertainty about the future.

Without safe spaces for expression and participation, well-being suffers. Our project responds by building the core capacities children need to understand themselves, relate to others, and shape the world around them.

Rooted in the Learning for Well-being Framework, our school-based method is holistic, participatory, and experience-driven.

We aim to:

  • Engage children as active creators of their learning
  • Foster strong relationships among students, teachers, and parents
  • Celebrate individual strengths
  • Build a culture of positive mental health in schools

We focus on four key areas:

  • Self-Awareness & Resilience
  • Belonging & Relationships
  • Mindful Use of Social Media
  • Managing Information Overload

Each class takes part in 4 to 6 full project days, structured around three phases:

  1. Inspiration – Awakening motivation from students’ unique starting points
  2. Information – Sharing practical tools for self-understanding and well-being
  3. Action – Co-creating initiatives that support mental health in everyday life

Through intergenerational partnerships and peer collaboration, the project delivers impact across school communities:

  • Students build emotional strength, confidence, and leadership skills
  • Teachers receive tools and training to integrate mental health into daily routines
  • Schools join a growing network committed to rights-based education and well-being
  • Communities gain spaces for collaboration and shared responsibility

Together, we create a culture where children and adults co-lead on well-being and address local challenges.

The 2gether for Mental Health initiative is currently being piloted in Cologne schools. The piloting phase will conclude in June 2025, with preliminary findings to be shared in September 2025.

Through this pilot, we aim to generate concrete evidence of how holistic, participatory approaches can strengthen mental health, resilience, and well-being among children and young people.

Our impact will be measured across multiple dimensions, including:

  • Children’s sense of agency and emotional well-being
  • Peer relationships and school climate
  • Teachers’ capacity to support mental health
  • Intergenerational collaboration within school communities

These insights will inform future scaling efforts, both within Germany and across broader European contexts.
