Empowering Every Child’s Voice: Teachers in Bolivia Lead Change from the Classroom

In many classrooms, children are taught to listen but not always encouraged to speak. Yet when they are invited to share their ideas, something powerful happens. They begin to see themselves as capable, valued, and heard.

In Bolivia, the Empowering from the Root Toolbox helps make that vision a reality. Co-created by Act2gether in Bolivia and Educo Bolivia, it introduces playful and participatory methods that support teachers in creating classrooms where every child’s voice can grow with confidence.

At the heart of the Toolbox is Arti, a friendly and curious character who guides children through activities that strengthen their core capacities: expressing themselves, making choices, and connecting with others. Through these activities, children learn to recognise emotions, support one another, and participate with greater confidence.

A Character That Inspires Confidence

Teachers across Bolivia see meaningful change in their classrooms. Students become more open, curious, and collaborative. Families also feel inspired to engage and share in the excitement.

“Thanks to working with the Toolbox and with Arti, my early years students now participate with enthusiasm. Even the quietest ones find the confidence to express themselves. That, for me, has been the greatest lesson from the Toolbox: being able to get the children actively involved,” says Roxana Morales, a teacher trained in the Toolbox and now applying it in her classroom.

“Moreover, the most valuable thing is seeing how this methodology doesn’t just motivate the children, but also engages their parents. The children already understand that they must look after Arti. Honestly, both the parents and the children are very excited to work with Arti.”

Teaching with Heart

For Yola Luna Mamani, who has been implementing the Toolbox for two years, Arti has become part of her classroom community.

“In the classroom, I find trust, tenderness, and the chance to transform their lives. With Arti, I’ve discovered a tool that not only awakens emotions in the children but also teaches them respect, empathy, and coexistence,” she explains.

“This is my second year using Arti. Last year, my children became familiar with him. I always have Arti in my classroom; he looks after them, and now that everyone knows him, they really love him. For me, being a teacher means working with love, patience, and commitment, knowing that every hug, every word, and every shared moment leaves a mark on their lives.”

Beyond the Classroom

The Empowering from the Root Toolbox forms part of a broader effort to bring the Learning for Well-being Approach into education. It helps teachers recognise each child’s uniqueness and support them in expressing their full potential.

When participation becomes an integral part of everyday learning, education itself begins to transform. It becomes less about instruction and more about connection, empathy, and trust.

Teachers like Roxana and Yola show how small, intentional changes in teaching can spark deep transformation—one conversation, one connection, and one child at a time.
